Description

SMARTFIL® PLA LW (Light Weight) is a technical filament designed to manufacture ultra-light parts without sacrificing print quality or mechanical resistance.
Thanks to its special formulation, the material expands during extrusion, achieving a weight reduction of up to 65% and optimizing material consumption.

Ideal for projects where lightness is essential —such as drones, mobile prototypes or large-format decorative pieces— this PLA offers a professional matte finish, excellent is compatible with most FDM printers.

Key benefits

  • Weight reduction of up to 65 %.

  • Lower material consumption per part.

  • Surface finish matte and professional.

  • Good mechanical resistance.

  • Printable without warm bed.

  • Ideal for large or moving parts.

Print Guide

  • Nozzle: 220–250 °C

  • Bed: 40–60 °C

  • Speed: 30–50 mm/s

  • Recommended flow: 60–80% of standard PLA .

  • Technical note: The expansion is directly proportional to temperature.

    • Higher temperature → Lower flow to maintain dimensions and stability.

    • Lower temperature → Higher flow to compensate for less expansion.

Step-by-step guide to printing SMARTFIL® PLA LW

  1. Prepare the 3D file

    • designs with lightweight structures (honeycomb, thin walls) to maximize weight reduction.

    • If you are looking for maximum lightness, adjust the flow according to the desired expansion.

  2. Configure the printer

    • Nozzle temperature: 220–250 °C (adjust according to speed and desired finish).

    • Bed temperature: 40–60 °C (can be printed without a heated bed, but improves adhesion).

    • Print speed: 30–50 mm/s for uniform expansion.

  3. Adjust the flow rate

    • Reduces flow rate to 60–80% over standard PLA for maximum expansion and lower weight.

    • Important: the expansion is directly proportional to temperature.

      • Higher temperature → Lower flow to maintain part size and dimensional stability.

      • Lower temperature → Higher flow to compensate for less expansion.

    • Always perform a test piece to find the optimal balance.

  4. Print & Monitor

    • Check the first layers to ensure good adhesion.

    • Limit the fan in the first layers to improve the bond between them.

  5. Postprocessing (optional)

    • The matte finish often avoids sanding or painting.

    • If more strength is needed, increase the wall thickness or infill in the design.
